Iftar Party - 5 September 2009

E-mail Print PDF
Ramadan is the month of worship, prayer and spiritual purification. It is also a time when Syrians love to meet up with friends and family, and spend time with them.
The Syrian Society in Britain has organized two Dish Parties for its Members and Guests. The first one took place on 5 September 2009 in Wilmslow, and the second is planned for 19 September 2009 in Sheffield.
To add a bit of variety, our lady-guests were asked to wear their best 'gallabiyeh'!.. The amazing collection of costumes that were on display was just stunning.. The ladies paraded into the Hall in a vibrant display of traditional, beautifully made and skilfully designed 'gallabiyehs'.. But it was not just the ladies who made the effort: a couple of brave men, namely Ayman and Basil, also took the trouble to don traditional attire!.. Ayman wore a silk 'abayeh' and 'tarboush', while Basil came dressed up in a Sheikh costume!...
The fantastic dishes that we have come to expect on the SSiB dish parties were particularly delicious after a long day of fasting!.. The variety was amazing, and the quality was better than ever!.. Our guests showed their appreciation by making sure that the feast of amazing dishes, and all the effort that went into preparing them, did not go to waste!...
Then, there was a fun competition, when guests were asked to nominate the person with the best costume. Basil was deservedly voted as the best dressed person!.. He won a beautiful painting of a scene from old Damascus.
We look forward to seeing you on 19 September in Sheffield.. And Ladies, don't forget to wear your 'gallabiyeh'!..
To get a feel of the lovely atmosphere that we have all experienced, have a look at these photos...
