Last year, we decided that SFiB should adopt a charity each year, and (in case you haven’t heard already!..) last year, we raised £6,000 for the SOS Children’s Villages in Syria.

This year, and after much deliberation and consideration, we decided to adopt an established charity that has been caring for needy children for 56 years!..

Child Care Society جمعية رعاية الطفل was established in 1954, and has since been working very hard to support needy children, by providing financial help, health care, social and educational support, through the children’s own family structures.

In 1957, the Society established a Nursery School for pre-school children aged 3 to 6 years, and in 1973, a crèche was opened, to care for younger children (6 months to 3 years) of working mothers.

In 2000, a magnificent effort led to establishing a ground-breaking Care Centre for Down’s Syndrome children, the first of its kind in the City of Homs . The Centre currently cares for 43 Down’s Syndrome children and young adults, aged between 4 and 20 years. The children and young adults are divided into five age groups, and into ability groups within each class. The aim of the Centre is to equip the children with the skills and confidence to allow them to lead as normal and independent a life as possible.

In 2005, the Society set up a Donation Collection Centre that serves a dual function: First, the Centre collects various types of donations, like food, cloths, domestic appliances, as well as monetary donations, and distributes those donations to needy families. Second, it provides employment opportunities for people from poorer families through working at the Centre. The Centre also operates a catering section, that provides food for social occasions and parties, as well as a sewing workshop, where girls from poor families learn the crafts of sewing and dressmaking, and earn wages from their work.

Furthermore, these activities provide a valuable source of income for the Society, to use for its charitable work.

Syrian Friends in Britain is planning a series of fund-raising activities throughout the coming twelve months. There will be dedicated events, as well as activities within our Dish Parties and other regular events. In our Eid Al-Adha Party, we started the ball rolling, and raised over £850 from the sale of raffle tickets, and donations.

However, the formal launch will be at our forthcoming keynote event: A Charity Concert by the world-renowned Syrian composer and pianist, Malek Jandali...

Malek will be performing, for one night only, at this prestigeous venue in London. The Programme promises to be an intriguing and entertaining one.. It will incorporate 'The Oldest Music Notation in the World', which was discovered in the ancient City of Ugarit near the Syrian coast...

This Charity Concert will be held on 5th March 2011, at St John's, Smith Square, London SW1P 3HA. Tickets are on sale from Mrs Heba Abu Kalam, our Activities and Social Affairs Officer ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), or from Mr Aladdin Kamar, SAA-UK PR Officer ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Throughout the year, we will be running charity sales, as well as charity stalls during our Dish Parties and other activities. We will take every opportunity to raise money for Child Care Society, and we will be relying on your help, valued support, and unbounded generosity.

The definitive programme has not been finalized yet, but we will definitely keep you informed about all our plans as they crystalize.

You can follow our plans for the various charity events and activities on our website (www.sfib.org.uk), and on our Facebook Group page.

Last year, you generosity and your contributions raised a fantastic £6,000 for the SOS Children’s Villages in Syria... Help us do even better this year.. for the Child Care Society and the children and families they help every day...
